Mission Bay Wetlands
Kendall-Frost Mission Bay Marsh Reserve sits at the northeast end of Mission Bay and was the site of UC San Diego's Love Your Wetlands Day, co-hosted by the San Diego Audubon Society. On a picture-perfect Saturday in February, hundreds of volunteers from a variety of different organizations came together to learn about the importance of our region's wetlands and the need to advocate for their preservation. The event began with a number of welcoming speeches by wetlands experts as well as local dignitaries including UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla, San Diego Councilmember Joe LaCava, and San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria. Groups were then matched with guides who led them out into the marsh to pick up any trash they could find. We had 8 members of our club and 5 additional family members armed with graspers and buckets to collect our booty. We managed to fill five 5-gallon buckets before we turned our tools over to the next team of volunteers. We all left with a better understanding of our wetlands and the satisfaction of participating in their preservation. Many thanks to all who came out to volunteer and thank you to Alex Kwoka for getting us involved in this event and keeping us informed and organized!
